Offaly 3:02 Meath 1:07

Offaly Junior camogie team traveled to Ashbourne in Meath on Sunday last to take on the home team in their first game in this seasons National League Division 3 game. Their games against Dublin and Armagh were both cancelled due to the weather conditions and so Meath had already beaten Dublin in an earlier round.

The Offaly management gave some girls their first taste of Junior camogie and with some positional changes also Offaly never settled into the free flowing game which we saw them play last season. Offaly played with a strong wind in the first half and did most of the attacking but were very slow to register any scores. Shots were off target dropping wide and not enough direct play meant that many scoring chances being missed. Siobhan Flannery opened the scoring with a pointed free after Karen Nugent was fouled. This was quickly followed by a well taken goal by Arlene Watkins after some good work by Elaine Sullivan and Sheila Sullivan. Marion Crean who was in a new role in the half forward line scored a lovely goal when she collected a good pass from Fiona Stephens and Offaly seemed to be cruising. Meath then pushed forward and came more into the game as the rain began to fall and were rewarded with a point from a 65m free. Marion Crean pointed from play after some great work by Michaela Morkan who cleared a great ball straight into Marion’s path, she collected well and slotted her shot between the posts. That was to be Offaly’s last score of the half on the twenty minute mark and as the rain got heavier, Meath began to get stuck into Offaly and Karen Nugent who was playing well picked up two knocks in close succession.

Meath pointed a from another 65m free and as the half time whistle went it was Meath 0-2 Offaly 2-2.

Offaly resumed the second half as they had started with chances being missed and now playing against the strong wind. Meath took advantage and pointed a free from 45m. This gave them confidence and they pointed again from play. Another pointed free left only three points between them and Offaly were struggling. Tina Hannon was then introduced for Shauna Flynn who had picked up an injury and fresh legs made a difference as Tina ran at the Meath defense but still that final shot always fell short and the Meath keeper cleared well on a few occasions. Lorraine Keena replaced Arlene Watkins and Debbie Flynn replaced Siobhan Flannery and Lorraine did some good defending and set up Tina Hannon who opened up the Meath backline, She laid off a great pass to Fiona Stephens but her shot was blocked and luckily fell straight to Aoife Corrigan who doubled to the net to put Offaly back to five points. Claire Nevin then replaced Elaine Sullivan. Meath didn’t give up and pointed another free before they got their goal after a goalmouth scramble.

This left just one point between the teams but Offaly had that little bit of experience and held out for a valuable victory. Final score Meath 1-7 Offaly 3-2.

Offaly were lucky to survive but as this was their very first game this year and some new faces on show it was a good two points. This game will stand to the girls and they now realize how much work has to be done if they want to return to last years standard.

There next game is on Sunday next possibly in Lusmagh against Dublin.

Team: Audrey Kennedy, Amie Dooley, Elaine Dermody, Karen Brady, Sheila Sullivan, Michaela Morkan, Linda Sullivan, Elaine Sullivan, Karen Nugent, Siobhan Flannery, Marion Crean, Shauna Flynn, Aoife Corrigan, Fiona Stephens, Arlene Watkins, Tina Hannon, Lorraine Keena, Natalie McCabe, Debbie Flynn, Claire Nevin, Claire Birmingham, Leanne Scully, Grace Clendenning, Katie Bergin, Elanor Clendenning, Emma Dunne.

Training continues in Crinkle on Friday night at 8pm.
